An essay
competition on “The role of students in wildlife conservation” marked the
beginning of this year’s World Rhino Day, on 22nd September, where 170
school students from Class V to Class X participated. The venue was Neheru High
School (Samua Gati Village), which is around 12 km from Bansbari Range of Manas
National Park. The program was organized collaboratively by
WWF-India and Manas Ever Welfare Society (MEWS). The essay competition was
followed by plantation of Bakul trees
in the school campus.
Field Director of Manas Tiger Reserve, Mr. H.K. Sarma,
who was the Chief Guest for the program, spoke about the rhinoceros, its
mythological and ecological importance in Assam. Likewise representatives of
MEWS, the headmasters of the
school and a renowned local wildlife
expert, Mr. Dhanjit Das, explained about the various aspects of wildlife
conservation. The teachers
of the school were very pleased with the program which was one of its kind in
the area and requested for more such awareness programs and visit to the
forests of Manas for their students.
The presence of the senior most forest
official (Field Director) of Manas Tiger Reserve throughout the day-long
program was a positive gesture towards the goal of the forest department and
local communities working together for conservation.
