Manas National Park in 2016!

Life is not a  matter of milestones but memories. In the year 2016, we had done lots to conserve the beautiful landscape of  Manas. I would like to look back at briefly gone days of the year 2016....

Unicorns Family at Manas
Dwaimalo with his mother (R17)
This was a mixed year for the rhino family of Manas.  During this period, we lost four rhinos out of them two rhinos died due to poaching and two due to natural cause. We lost Dwaimalo (R17A)  on 22nd April. Dwaimalo's mother was killed by poachers just after 20 days of his birth at Sidhajhar areas under Bansbari range. Thereafter, we rescued that calf from Kahitama areas of Manas and rehabilitated for about one year with another female rhino calf  (i.e.Purabi).

Rhino 10A with his Mother (R10)

Besides our much effort, on 6th May, we lost another orphaned rhino 10A at Bhuyanpara range. This was first rhino calf born at Manas after rhino reintroduction program. Mother of 10A was poached after one year of his birth. After the death of his mother another adult, male R5 guarded this calf against wild predators. This was unique and loveable animal behavior we observed at Manas.

You can read more about it here.
Mainao The First Reintroduced Rhino at Manas

We lost Mainao, the first female rhino introduced at Manas under rescue and rehabilitation program on 29th, July. She died due to the natural cause. Mainao was introduced at the age of 3 years and rehabilitated in the rhino camp area of Manas for about two years. She was released in open in 2008. Thereafter, she associated with other introduced male rhinos R1 and R2.  As a result of association, Mainao gave birth two calves from the period of 2012 to 2014.  Two calves are now well grown.

We lost another female rhino R4 on 28th August at Sidhajhar area.  She was the first rhino who spent two years at Panbari range (Western Range of Manas ) and also visited Bhutan several times. She might be first recorded transboundary rhino after rhino reintroduction program at Manas. She returned to the central range of Manas in 2013 and again returned to her original areas in 2015. Unfortunately, the heartless poachers killed her in the ranging areas.

Today, Manas has 28 rhinos (26th December) I expect good health and secure future of small family rhinos from the first day of 2017. I hope our united effort will secure their future.

Greater Manas

During this period,  350 square kilometers of wildlife habitat was added into Manas National Park which is also described as Greater Manas. As a result, total areas of Manas extended up to 850square kilometer. Therefore, more responsibilities and hard work ahead to keep this habitat safe and secure to propagate the wildlife.

Roaring Tiger at Manas

Amidst of difficulties and shortcoming, 50% tiger population has been increased in this period and need more intervention to revive its population. It is very encouraging fact for tiger conservation front of the country. Improvement of protection, awareness of local fringe community and dedication of  Department of Forest and other stakeholders must necessary to increase this Royal Animal of Manas.

We have much more to do the great nature landscape of the earth. I wish great, secure happy new year to Manas Wildlife and it's Well Wishers
