There are a certain group of people who think and act together and they created history. Mr. Birbahadur Lama (Tutu Lama) is a simple youth living in a village near to Manas. He is adorable an industrious person. Mr. Lama started his early carrier 15 years back as a grocery shop owner in the entry point (Second Gate) of Bansbari range of Manas. There were no tourism facilities around the park at that moment and only government-owned bungalows and two tourist resort available for tourist. In such a depressing situation only a few numbers true nature lover and researcher visited the Manas.
Lama and his close friend often discuss how to develop Manas as the best tourist destination. Besides, they have limited exposure so unable to think beyond North East India. They wich to develop tourist facilities like Kaziranga National Park. Lama often observed some tourist hiring some Jungle Safari Jeep at Manas from Kaziranga. Those jeep Safari drivers were showing extra-hype to Lama and his friends. But Lama somehow able to make friend some of the jeep drivers and collected the source of used Gypsy information for the purchase. They got used Maruti Suzuki Gypsy sell information from North Bengal. The vehicle owner was a tea estate Manager. So Lama and his one close friend Sanjit arranged the necessary budget to purchase the gypsy.
They borrowed some amount of money from Mohan Brahma (then range officer Bansbari) and left for the target Gypsy. They travel almost one week to Siliguri (North Bengal) to purchase the Gypsy from tea estate manager. They were so hilarious after achieving their target and started dream project wildlife Safari for tourist just after the return and created history in Manas.
Now Manas has more than 120 Maruti Company Gypsy for a wildlife safari. Almost all Jeep Safari drivers are trained nature guide and all belong to the local villages. More than 150 families directly or indirectly benefited from this Jeep Safari unit of Park. They are now the backbone of tourist facilities of Manas.
After a prolonged period of social unrest around the Manas (1989-2003) this entire area has been developing keeping Manas National Park as the core zone. Still, miles to go to get a better situation at Manas. We hope the Manas golden era will be reviving fast in collaboration with all well-wishers. We must acknowledge all such single effort for the betterment of Manas.
