The Oriental honey buzzard

The oriental honey buzzard (Pernis ptilorhynchus) is a medium-sized raptor and is distributed in Asia, the Indian Sub-Continent, South East Asia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. It is a local migratory and appears during the honey season in NE India.

The male buzzard is smaller than the female. The male measures 50-70cm in length and weighs 750-1300g. The female weighs 950-1500g. The wingspan is 110-160cm. The male buzzard is long-necked with a small blue-grey head with a short head crest. The tail is long and darker with a white band. The back is brown and the underparts are paler. The female has a brown head. It occasionally makes a high-pitched whistling sound.

This species commonly inhabited the woodland's broader leaf forest.  They construct nests in forks of trees.

They prefer the larvae of bees and wasps and also bees and cicadas. Sometimes they eat bits of honeycomb and honey

They breed in the month of March in South India but in the northern range, it is during the summer months. Availability of feed is also a factor for breeding. The common mating display includes Wing Span.
