The Forest That Refused to Be Forgotten

 A personal reflection on two decades of rhino recovery in Manas National Park, Assam



There are landscapes that change your career, and there are landscapes that change your life. For me, Manas National Park has been both. When I first entered Manas more than two decades ago, it was a place carrying the scars of conflict and uncertainty. The silence of its forests was different not the peaceful silence of wilderness, but the silence left behind after wildlife had disappeared, protection systems had weakened, and hope had become fragile. Many people believed Manas had lost its future. Yet, standing in those grasslands beneath the Bhutan hills, I felt the landscape still had something to say. This is the story of how that silence slowly turned into the sound of recovery.

Manas is one of the world's most extraordinary protected areas. Stretching across the Himalayan foothills along the India–Bhutan border, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rich grasslands, wetlands, forests, and remarkable biodiversity. It is also part of a much larger ecological landscape connected with Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan, allowing wildlife to move freely across international boundaries.

But the Manas we know today is very different from the Manas of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Years of civil unrest, poaching, and institutional disruption devastated wildlife populations and damaged conservation infrastructure. The Greater One-horned Rhinoceros, once an integral part of this ecosystem, disappeared from the park. Anti-poaching camps were abandoned, monitoring systems collapsed, and conservation became an enormous challenge.

The question was no longer how to conserve Manas. It was whether Manas could recover at all. 

Before bringing back rhinos, we had to rebuild trust People often imagine wildlife reintroduction as the dramatic moment when an animal is released into the wild. In reality, that moment is only the visible tip of years of preparation.

Before a single rhino returned, Manas needed protection, infrastructure, and people willing to believe in the landscape again. Roads leading to remote camps were repaired. Anti-poaching camps were rebuilt. Patrolling was strengthened with local volunteers and Home Guards working alongside frontline forest staff. Veterinary teams, scientists, wildlife managers, transport specialists, security personnel, and conservation organisations came together to design one of India's most ambitious wildlife restoration programmes. This preparation was as important as the translocation itself. We were not just moving rhinos; we were rebuilding a conservation system. 



The day everything changed

On 25 February 2006, a young female rhino named Mainao stepped into the grasslands of Manas. She was not a wild-caught rhino. She had been rehabilitated after being rescued as a calf and was returning to a landscape where her species had vanished. Watching her explore her new home remains one of the most emotional moments of my conservation journey.

Mainao's arrival represented much more than the return of a single animal. It signalled that Manas was ready for a second chance. Two years later, on 12 April 2008, the first wild-to-wild rhino translocation under the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 (IRV2020) programme took place. Two adult male rhinos travelled from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to Manas, marking the beginning of a long-term effort to establish a free-ranging breeding population in the park. 

Twenty years of careful conservation

The recovery did not happen overnight. It unfolded through patience, science, and persistence. Between 2008 and 2021, eight carefully planned translocation operations brought 22 wild rhinos from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Kaziranga National Park to Manas. During the same period, 20 rehabilitated rhinos from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation were also relocated to strengthen the recovering population. Every translocation required months of planning, habitat assessment, veterinary care, logistics, security coordination, transport, and post-release monitoring. Each rhino carried a story, but together they created something much larger—the return of a species to a recovering landscape. 

Recovery was never only about rhinos

One lesson has stayed with me throughout this journey: species recovery succeeds when landscapes recover. As rhinos returned, conservation investment expanded beyond the animals themselves. Grasslands received greater management attention. Wetlands were monitored. Individual rhinos were identified and tracked using radio telemetry, GIS, and field-based monitoring systems. Patrols became more systematic, and ecological data began guiding management decisions.

The benefits spread across the ecosystem. Tigers increased in number during the post-conflict recovery period. Herbivore populations improved. Birdlife became more visible in restored habitats. Manas gradually regained its identity as one of the most important wildlife landscapes in the Eastern Himalayas. The rhino became a flagship—but the landscape was the real beneficiary. 

Conservation brought people back too

Wildlife recovery also changed people's relationship with Manas. As security improved and wildlife became visible again, tourism slowly returned. Local communities found new opportunities through guiding, hospitality, transport, and nature-based livelihoods. Young people who once grew up hearing stories of conflict began growing up with stories of wildlife.

Conservation cannot succeed without communities, and the recovery of Manas reminded us that protecting nature and improving local livelihoods can move together when conservation is built on trust and participation. 

A global recognition of resilience

In 2011, UNESCO removed Manas from the List of World Heritage in Danger after recognising the remarkable progress made in restoring the site's ecological values and management systems.

For many of us who had worked through difficult years, this was not simply an international recognition. It was a deeply personal reminder that persistence matters. Manas had always remained a World Heritage Site, but its removal from the Danger List symbolised the world acknowledging that recovery was real. 

One landscape, two countries

Manas teaches another important conservation lesson: wildlife does not recognise political boundaries. The forests of Manas National Park seamlessly connect with Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan, creating one continuous ecological landscape. Rhinos, elephants, tigers, and countless other species depend on this connectivity for dispersal, breeding, and long-term survival. Protecting Manas therefore means protecting a shared India–Bhutan landscape through cooperation, science, and mutual commitment. 

Twenty years later, the journey continues

Today, when I walk through the grasslands of Manas and see rhino calves born in the wild, I think about the many people whose dedication made this recovery possible. Forest guards who patrolled through difficult nights. Veterinarians who worked during complex translocations. Community members who chose conservation over uncertainty. Researchers who spent years monitoring animals across floods and seasons. Conservation partners who stayed committed when success was never guaranteed. Every rhino calf born in Manas is more than a population statistic. It is evidence that landscapes can recover when people refuse to give up on them.


Hope is a conservation strategy


Looking back over two decades, I do not see rhino reintroduction as the end of a conservation story. I see it as the beginning of a larger one.

Manas still faces challenges—climate change, invasive species, habitat succession, human–wildlife interactions, and the constant need for strong protection. Recovery is never permanent; it must be nurtured continuously. But Manas has taught me something invaluable. Conservation is ultimately an act of hope. It asks people to invest years of effort without knowing when success will come. Sometimes that hope takes the shape of a rebuilt patrol camp. Sometimes it looks like fresh rhino footprints in wet grass after the monsoon.

And sometimes, it looks like a forest that refused to be forgotten.
