Three forest guards take little bit rest, after long patrolling inside Bhuyanpara range of Manas National Park. Presently, law and enforcement is prime concern for Manas. Last six month frontline staff of Manas got lots of problem due to disturb  law and order situation. Staff need courage to do duty in very difficult condition. Even in festive season some staff carried out  wild life protection duty with minimum warm cloths. Dear reader may I request you please provide your valuable suggestion and support to normalize  law and order situation at Manas as well as help front line staff courage back . Please provide them some basic support to duty during chill night.

We still remember the majestic moment with Rhino-2!!!

Image
Rhino-2 (Iragdao) was translocated to Manas National Park on 12th April,2008 from Pobitora Wild Life Sanctuary. Rhino-1 and Rhino-2 were  together released  at Manas under the program of IRV2020. This was created a new history in the path of rhino conservation chapter in Assam and India. Rhino-2 was quite shy and like to use Bhuynapara range after release at Manas . Same animal was stray outside from the park on 1st September,2008 and reached 100km distances from  the Manas park boundary. We were relentlessly working and able to recapture this animal at Kalseni after 15 days of hard work.  Rhino-2 was dominant male and father of almost 8 rhino calves born at Manas . This majestic male was killed by poacher 13th January,2013. Today on the day of second death anniversary I remembered with sorrowful heart.  Love you Iragdao!!!

Rhino Monitoring at Manas NP

Image
Monitoring Rhino with UHF radio collar at Manas NP We have experimenting rhino monitoring activity at Manas National Park with UHF-Ultra High Frequency radio collar. We used only one UHF radio collar to track its movement. In this photograph author has been trying to download all tacking information through wireless connectivity via a modem to downloading machine (is an small computer called as Concel) . As per experience I have found this process is very tedious. Either observer have to go elephant back or very close distance (~300m) with proper observation on rhino behavior. Sometime modem is not connecting from a very close distance when rhino inside a dense vegetation .  If download machine able to capture all information from the collar it gives us ultimate information on rhino movement and habitat preferences.

Legend behind name Manas!

Image
The river Manas According to a school of thought, the river Manas actually has a Bhutanese name origin as “DANG-ME-CHU” and “ MANG-DE-CHU ” meeting at a confluence point called Panbang, a small sub divisional HQ inside Bhutan to become Manas River that is upstream within Bhutan. Though lost in antiquity the name “ Manah ” (not Manas as is usually known) is derived from Assamese word “ maan ”, meaning the Burmese army, popularly known as Maan, who raided Assam three times in medieval period . As the river was the western limit of Burmese advance, the challenge came from across saying: maan+ah = manah ; meaning “ Maan you come if you dare ”!
