Legend behind name Manas

Image
Manas has a history and many legends. Many folktales relates with name Manas. I hereby describing one of thought as follows: According to a school of thought, the river Manas actually has a Bhutanese name as “ DANG-ME-CHU” and “ MANG-DE-CHU ” meeting at a confluence point called Panbang, a small sub divisional HQ inside Bhutan to become Manas River that is upstream within Bhutan. Though lost in antiquity the name “ Manah ” (not Manas as is usually known) is derived from Assamese word “ maan ”, meaning the Burmese army, popularly known as Maan, who raided Assam three times spreading terror. As the river was the western limit of Burmese advance, the challenge came from across saying: maan+ah = manah ; meaning “ Maan you come if you dare ”. On the contrary, the other school of thought offers the view that the name “manas” gets its name after the serpent Goddess “ manasa ” (Durga). Rhino-2 (Iragdao) This was a male sub-adult rhino translocated to Manas National Park from Pobitora Wild Life Sanctuary on the 12th April 2008 under the program of Indian Rhino Vision-2020.  It was well adapted in the new homeland of Manas NP and created a history. This rhino was stray outside from the park and reached 100 km from the park boundary from 1st-14th September 2008. Manas Team was able to capture after 15 days of continuous follow-up. It was a major stray rhino capture incident in the conservation history of the World. After that incident, Rhino never tried to stray outside and settled perfectly. He became a dominant male after killing of Rhino-1. Rhino-2 was the father of all newborn calves born in Manas NP. We Missed You Giribala (Rhino-8)

Image
Giribala ( Rhino-8) I feel very sad when I try to recollect your  memories . I try to count every step of you in new home land of Manas NP. You are shy and timid and always like to live deep inside Bansbari. Sometime you have been in Makhibaha of Bhuyanpara and sometime bank of river Beki. I observed nuptial knot with late Rhino-2. We were delighted when you became mother and first sighting with new born at Charfuli. Your motherhood declares another milestone to Indian Rhino Vision-2020 and future of Manas NP. But cruel human never give you right of living in this world. You were killed on last day(31st Dec) of 2013.  May your soul rest in haven!!   Giribala  ( Name was given by  Indian Rhino Vision -2020 Veterinary team )
