The Green Warrior

Life inside the forest is very vibrant and dynamic. It is also unpredictable, as nobody knows what would happen next.  To adapt to such a situation requires a lot of patience, learning, and love for wildlife and nature. The appropriate logistics and capacity to cope with an emergency are also necessary. The forest guards or forest rangers are the frontline worker to protect our threatened biodiversity. They are doing their duty day and night far from the homely comfort zone of other sections of society. However, a majority of ground forest staff live in an unsuitable situation. They do not have the proper capacity to deal with emergency and appropriate field logistics. They might continue in such a situation because of the love and compassion they have for nature and wildlife. Wildlife conservation requires a lot of attention and investment for better protection to support wildlife. Irregular and illegal destruction of pristine wildlife habitat has threatened all wildlife at...

Grassland Management -I

Image
The grassland is a major component of the complex habitat system. The characteristic of grassland determines the diversity of prey and predator populations in an area. Therefore grassland management is an integral part of the protected areas management plan. We may know that natural phenomenon has determined the forest dynamics and affects the diversity of habitat. However anthropogenic factors are also contributing to regulate the floristic composition of the habitat. Past Management Practices  Therefore protected area managers have experimented with different methods to manage the grassland habitat. Among all management practices, seasonal grassland burning is one of the most popular in the flood plain habitats of Brahmaputra. During dry season park managers burned the mature and dry grassland areas with the demarcation of designated firelines. These fire lines maybe road, river channel, etc. During the burning process, the old grass burnt and that help to grow new and succulent...

Together We Thrive

Conservation science is an interdisciplinary subject.   It is more or less the combination of biological, social, political, and economic matters.   For a successful conservation program, it is necessary to balance among the different stakeholders so that everyone can win. However, the contentment of different stakeholders on different issues in the conservation process is very difficult. It is a great responsibility for project designers to tradeoff with the communities on different matters to meet the conservation objectives. In India, all the protected areas are surrounded by diverse communities with numerous social issues. Almost all these protected areas situated in geographically remote locations. Therefore, it is necessary to look into communities and related issues before designing programs. It is proved always that the involvement of the community is crucial to achieving a successful conservation program. As a biologist, I did not have much experience...
