Rufous Wood Pecker (Microptennus brachyurus) is common bird in Manas. Due to its color, it is not easily sighted in woodland. It is found in eastern and northern India and many other countries of the world. The global population size of rufous woodpecker has not been quantified yet. But population is subjected to be in declining stage due to habitat destruction.
It is medium sized rufous colored woodpecker with a short crest and a short, weak and slightly curved black bill. It has black vermiculation on its rufous body and dark eye stripe. The upper parts are finally barred black. The male has small red patches at the eyes.
